Sprecher's fire-brewed root beer in a lighter frame: the Milwaukee brewer trims the calories but keeps the house signature, a creamy vanilla roundness laid over a classic sassafras-and-root spine. Sweetened with raw honey and backstopped by an alternative sweetener, it reads creamy and full on the front but lands cleaner than the full-sugar original, shedding much of that caramelized, syrupy cling on the finish. The result sits squarely in the creamy-traditional corner of the root beer field, recognizably Sprecher in flavor while running noticeably leaner in body. A sound everyday pour for drinkers who want the vanilla-cream comfort of an old-school root beer without the heavy sweetness.

The maker

Sprecher Brewing Company, founded in Milwaukee in 1985 by ex-Pabst brewer Randal Sprecher and now based in Glendale, Wisconsin, is famous for its fire-brewed root beer sweetened with raw Wisconsin honey. The Low-Cal Root Beer is a reduced-calorie version of the flagship, still built on the brewery's signature gas-fired kettle process and real honey. The brand was acquired by local investors in 2020, who broadened its national reach.
