A Texas-made root beer that leans hard into its sarsaparilla half, built on real sarsaparilla root and pure cane sugar rather than extract-and-corn-syrup shortcuts. The result skews earthy and woody up front, with the saponin-tinged root character a sarsaparilla drinker looks for, then resolves into a soft, vanilla-leaning creamy finish that begs for a scoop of ice cream. Caffeine-free and bottled in glass, it reads more old-fashioned soda-fountain than candy-sweet, with restrained carbonation and a full, rounded body. A solid, honest pour for anyone chasing the rootier, less wintergreen-forward end of the category.

The maker

Boots Beverages is a Texas family soda maker whose roots trace to a Central Texas bottling operation the Kristen family acquired in the early 20th century. The modern brand was founded in 1948 by Boots Kristen on the conviction that real ingredients make better soda, and it was later revived by his descendants amid the state's craft-beverage boom. Every soda is still sweetened with pure cane sugar and bottled in Texas.
