Big Ben's Root Beer
Big Ben's (Catawissa Bottling Works) · Full-bodied cane-sugar root beer
Catawissa, Pennsylvania, USA
A heritage Pennsylvania root beer bottled by Catawissa Bottling Works, the same family operation that has run since 1926. The profile is a textbook full-bodied, cane-sugar build: a creamy, rounded mouthfeel carrying clear sassafras at its core, with anise and a cool wintergreen lift threading through and a caramel-tinged sweetness underneath. Carbonation sits in the moderate range, letting the body and root character stay forward rather than scrubbing them away, and the finish is smooth and lingering without much bark bitterness or chemesthetic heat. A nostalgic, well-balanced classic-style root beer rather than a sharp or experimental craft expression.

The maker
Big Ben's is the flagship soda line of the Catawissa Bottling Company, founded in 1926 when the Gregorowicz family converted a Catawissa creamery into a bottling works. The fourth-generation, family-owned operation still produces its cane-sugar sodas in glass bottles at that original Pennsylvania location. Its root beer is a traditional cane-sugar formulation.
