Ginger beer
Reed's Extra Ginger Beer
Reed's Inc. · Jamaican-style ginger beer (non-alcoholic)
Norwalk, Connecticut, USA
A mid-tier-heat Jamaican-style brew built on 26 grams of fresh ginger root per bottle, roughly double the ginger of Reed's Original, which gives it a genuine warming kick at the back of the throat without tipping into the searing intensity of the brand's Strongest. The fresh-ginger bite is wrapped in a generous, fruit-forward sweetness from cane sugar, honey, and pineapple juice, with a touch of citrus brightening the edges; the result is sippable and approachable rather than aggressive. Carbonation is lively and soda-like, but the body reads light and thin rather than syrupy, so it drinks easy and mixes cleanly into a Moscow Mule. It sits in the accessible middle of the craft ginger-beer field: real ginger and real warmth, generously sweetened, with the main knock being how much sugar it carries.

The maker
Reed's was founded by Christopher J. Reed, who began developing a fresh-ginger brew in 1987 and incorporated the company that became Reed's Inc., a publicly traded craft ginger beverage maker. Reed's Extra Ginger Beer is brewed with roughly double the fresh ginger of the original for a hotter, more pungent bite, using real ginger root, cane sugar, honey, and fruit juices rather than artificial flavors. The company, originally based in Southern California, moved its headquarters to Norwalk, Connecticut, in 2018.
