A clean, easygoing ginger beer from Portland, Maine's Capt'n Eli's line, brewed and bottled by Shipyard Brewing. Cane sugar carries a bright, crisp carbonation and moderate sweetness, while the ginger leans gentle: a slight warming bite rather than the fierce chemesthetic burn the hardcore ginger-beer crowd chases. The body is on the thin, sessionable side and the finish runs dry with a faint ginger tingle lingering. A friendly gateway pour that polarizes purists looking for more heat.

The maker

Capt'n Eli's traces back to the Forsley family, who began making root beer by hand in New Gloucester, Maine, in the 1920s; Fred Forsley brought the family recipe to market in 1996 and named the line after his father, Eli. The brand is owned, brewed, and bottled by Shipyard Brewing Co. in Portland, Maine, which produces the full Capt'n Eli's lineup of caffeine-free, gluten-free craft sodas.
