Birch beer

Foxon Park White Birch Soda

Foxon Park Beverages, Inc. · White (clear) birch beer

East Haven, Connecticut, USA

A textbook example of the clear, New England style of white birch beer: cane-sugar sweet and rounded with a soft creamy edge, then cut by a bright wintergreen lift that defines the style. The wintergreen leans pointed enough to read as faintly medicinal between sips, which is exactly what enthusiasts of the white style are after rather than a flaw. Carbonation is brisk and holds its sparkle to the last pour, keeping the sweetness lively instead of cloying. It sits among the benchmarks of the category, a regional Connecticut classic that rewards anyone exploring birch beer beyond the darker, root-forward bottlings.

The maker

Foxon Park Beverages is a family-owned soda maker founded in 1922 in East Haven, Connecticut, by Italian immigrant Matteo Naclerio, who first bottled water before pivoting to soda in 1929. The company still operates from its original Foxon Boulevard location and is a New England favorite, known for sweetening with cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup. Its White Birch is a pale, wintergreen-forward birch soda.
